Project Cronos: Revolutionary Data Storage Service
Project Cronos, a new data storage service from Sony, has reportedly been in development for at least five years. It is expected to be built around the PS5's solid-state drive. The Japanese company has thus come up with a novel network storage solution based on the PCI Express standard. In its final form, this new technology should be capable of reading up to 5 GB of data per second with a latency of less than 1 ms.
Sony will rely on 28 different data centers to achieve this performance. Project Cronos may be launched on a large scale before March 2024.
The final product, codenamed Kura, reads 5 GB/s with <1ms latency.
Expanding Network and Launch Plans
According to sources, Sony will have 28 data centers across 15 metros for the PS5 Cloud streaming rollout, with plans to fully launch the feature in FY23 (April 2023 - March 2024).
Enhancing PlayStation Plus with Cloud Streaming
PlayStation announced in June that it is currently testing cloud streaming for supported PS5 games--this includes games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, Game Trials, and digital PS5 titles owned by players. When this feature launches, cloud game streaming will be available directly on your PS5 console. This means as a Premium member it'll be easier to jump into your favorite games without downloading them first onto your PS5. Our goal is to add this as an additional benefit to PlayStation Plus as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the value of PlayStation Plus."
