Game overview
Windrose is a PvE survival adventure set in an alternative Age of Piracy. It combines open-world exploration, base building, crafting, and combat across both land and sea. The game is currently available on Steam in Early Access.
Gameplay
Core mechanics span two distinct environments:
- On land: gather resources, craft equipment, and construct structures ranging from basic shelters to fortified outposts across procedurally generated biomes with hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest.
- At sea: captain a ship — from a nimble ketch to a large frigate — engage in naval combat with cannon fire at range or close in for boarding actions, with seamless transitions between ship and shore.
- Combat follows a soulslike structure, with dodging and parrying as core mechanics, and includes challenging boss encounters inspired by historical figures and supernatural forces.
- Playable solo offline or in co-op with up to 4 players via self-hosted or dedicated servers.
Progression and world structure
The world is procedurally generated, offering a different map layout per playthrough. It contains over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest. Character progression is tied to the character rather than the world seed.
The main story is estimated at 50–70 hours. The talent system includes four categories: a general and mobility tree, one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons, and ranged weapons, with free resets available.
Early Access status
Windrose entered Early Access on April 14, 2026. The current version includes three biomes. The developer plans to expand the game over an estimated 1.5 to 2.5 years, adding further biomes, bosses, enemies, ships, and story content before the full release.
