Game overview
Mina the Hollower is a top-down 2D action-adventure game developed by Yacht Club Games, the studio behind Shovel Knight. Players control Mina, a Hollower and inventor who arrives on the cursed Tenebrous Isle to investigate why her own Spark Generators have gone dark and overrun the island with monsters.
Gameplay
The game is built around a set of interlocking mechanics covering movement, combat, and exploration:
- Burrowing — Mina can tunnel underground to dodge attacks, cross gaps, access hidden areas, and reach the Underlab safe room; while burrowing she is immune to most damage
- Whip combat — her primary weapon, the Nightstar, attacks in four directions; additional weapons are unlockable and upgradeable at the forge
- Sidearms — secondary weapons such as hatchets and daggers, each with a distinct move set, carried one at a time
- Trinkets — over 60 equippable items that modify combat, platforming, and defense; up to five can be active simultaneously
- Health recovery — taking damage converts a portion of health to a temporary state; striking back at enemies quickly restores it, encouraging an aggressive playstyle
- Progression — enemies drop bones used as experience; leveling up improves Mina's stats to suit different playstyles
The world spans around 17 distinct areas with a non-linear structure. Puzzles include timed switches, lever sequences, and terrain manipulation. Earlier areas can be revisited as new abilities are acquired.
