The world's energy problem has only become worse in a dystopian future, and the few resources that are still generally available to be harvested are in unreachable and hostile regions. Oil and gas have been replaced with a new resource that is pumped up from the earth's interior. Despite being significantly more potent than conventional fossil fuel sources, this highly radioactive gas has a negative side effect. It was poisonous and lethal to anyone without hazmat gear, and it also created strange and horrifying changes in formerly harmless species. These creatures expanded to vast sizes and acquired a primitive type of intelligence that was determined to thwart any attempts made by humans to transform the radioactive gases into fuel.
The answer is here: after putting too many brave young technicians in danger, humanity have already begun to arm and equip pipeline personnel to protect and maintain the installations. The brave technician-soldiers may perform their duty with at least a healthy 2% probability of survival thanks to a powerful arsenal of destructive weapons and precise engineering that results in devastating gun towers (increased from 0,000002% before).
