Game overview
REPLACED is a single-player narrative-driven 2.5D action platformer developed by Sad Cat Studios and published by Thunderful. Players control R.E.A.C.H. (Research Engine for Altering and Composing Humans), an AI involuntarily trapped in a human body, investigating the corruption behind Phoenix Corporation in an alternate 1980s America shaped by nuclear catastrophe.
Setting and story
The game takes place in Phoenix City, a walled urban enclave in a post-nuclear dystopia where corporate control is absolute and human life is traded as a commodity. The narrative explores themes of identity, humanity, and control through morally complex characters as R.E.A.C.H. contends with unfamiliar human instincts alongside its mission to expose the corporation's secrets.
Gameplay
Mechanics span three interconnected areas:
- Cinematic platforming across layered 2.5D environments, with movement into the foreground and background to retrieve items and upgrades.
- Environmental puzzles integrated into exploration.
- Free-flow combat built around timing, counters, and dodges — chaining successful parries and dodges enables special moves that execute regular enemies or break the shields of armored opponents.
Presentation
All animations are hand-drawn. The visual style combines hand-crafted pixel art with modern lighting and visual effects. The soundtrack is synth-driven, consistent with the game's retro-futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic.
