Thomasina Bateman, an archivist, is compiling a book on England's barrows and describing the treasures she unearths there. An intriguing letter brings her to the tiny settlement of Bewlay, hidden away in the lonely countryside. As she reaches the destination, the mysterious man who called her is nowhere to be seen, also her assistant. The townspeople are leery of this woman because she is traveling alone and is dressed in pants - what an obscene! The excavation of Hob's Barrow is having trouble from the start... And then Thomasina begins experiencing odd nightmares...
